Parrot Toy

Parrots are but the most eccentric birds on the planet, and if you are planning to share your home with a bird possessing a character of a two-year-old kid, you must be perfectly aware of what makes a good parrot toy and provide your companion with them for his entire life. Parrots are much more rambunctious than many think them to be, and they are quite demanding in terms of toys, food and playing. They cannot withstand neglect or boredom and require daily interaction.

Needless to say, you will not be able to stay with your parrot all the time. Toys are there to make up for this temporary loss and distract a bird’s attention from loneliness, thus preventing separation anxiety. There are various types of bird cages and toys available on the pet market. Cages usually feature some elements that can keep your bird busy, but parrots tend to be very picky about toys, so, chances are you are going to have to do a lot of brain-racking to choose an appropriate toy for your parrot. Parrots like various types of toys, such as mirrors, sticks, ropes, balls, plastic chains and bells.

Whatever kind of toy your little feathered friend shows liking to, the first thing you must think about is your bird’s safety. Parrots chew and peck at everything they can grab with their beaks, so care must be taken that toys do not crumble into pieces that, if swallowed, may cause death from intestinal obstruction. Zinc covered metal bells are no good option, since zinc is extremely toxic to parrots.

Your parrot’s size and breed are two more decisive factors in choosing a suitable toy. There is just one simple and universal rule you should stick to: the larger the bird, the larger and stronger the toy to purchase. For example, large-sized Amazons and African Grey Parrots are very lively and inquisitive, and hence they must have a large and durable toy to blow off a little steam with. Wooden toys are more preferable for these birds, because it takes little time for their strong mandibles to reduce plastic items to pieces, which can cause a lot of trouble to these birds. For smaller parrot species, such as, for instance, Parakeets, large toys can be stunning. What they are really fond of is watching their own reflexion, so there is hardly a better entertainment in the whole world for them than a small mirror.

There is no grimmer thing for parrots than loneliness, so a good toy is always a good salvation for your parrot when you are away from home. Interaction for parrots is like fuel for cars, without which they promptly become exhausted. It has been proven that proper interaction is apt to prevent diseases and can prolong a bird’s life span, so a good parrot toy is the best preventive medicine you can offer your pet!
