African Gray Parrots - Training

To become good speakers African Gray Parrots should be trained from early childhood. It's recommended to buy a hand-fed or hand-feeding chick. Although they don't begin speaking until the age of 1 year, it's advisable to keep whistling and noise-making to minimum because it is easier for an African Gray parrot to learn and subsequently pronounce. There is no difference in males' or females' abilities, all Gray parrots are individuals. Parrots can use human speech not only as mindless mimics, but also in a meaningful way. They can name up to 40 different objects, respond to questions and even make up simple sentences.

African Gray Parrots - Care

Some Grays are subject to feather plucking because of poor diet and lack of bathing. Daily spraying is necessary for them. African Gray parrots cannot stand cold damp weather, so heating is vitally important for them. Gray parrots need a spacious cage big enough to move around, but not a narrow, tall one, as parrots don't fly straight up. Wood and bamboo cages are difficult to clean and are quickly chewed, so metal cages are the most practical. Being closed in a cage is boring and frustrating, and all parrots like to play and explore. So it's better to provide African Gray parrots with toys: ladders, ropes, swings, mirrors, bells and pieces of wood to chew.
